bffs...almost

home!

30.8.09

day: home sweet home!
an unexpectadly early move in to the new place. I am sleeping on the floor and fierce is right next to me. yay! a very busy day and I am exhausted, for so many reasons. there is a symphony of crickets outside my window, the cars are soft in the distance and the moon casts just the right glow on everything. It feels like a mixture of summer camps and exactly where I am supposed to be right now.
things: aca, Austin and mrs. greenpants! dinner w/ dad's college friend and his family. I hate being a tourist (but am trying to look at it with fresh perspective). re-united with my 'love is love' shirt. learning my way through a city who's street signs are all obscured. breathing. fierce got a bandana with chickens on it from my folks.

29.8.09

day: last day of driving
as expected for this part of the world, it took us all day (9:30-8:30) to get from southern pa to Boston. but we're here, yay! we are staying at a cute b&b close to where my forever home will be and trying to settle in for the night.
food: claire's cake, peaches, claire's quesadilla
music: spotty at best, NPR
things: I just took Thera-flu...a sign that things are how they are. there is more cake to eat. fierce threw up in the cvs parking lot. maybe we all have swine flu. I'm tired, but may stay up longer because I just discovered that Shannon is less than half a
mile (.4 to be exact) away from me right now. off we go!
Massachusetts!
manhattan. traffic all day! not too long to new haven. hopefully.

28.8.09

finally, back to 95. hmmm, not a big fan of dc to Baltimore.
dc...circles around the city!
eternity. smoking or non-smoking?
we are approaching Richmond, va. my mom forgot that the racecar is manual transmission...she realized the truth as she sat down to drive her first shift! it's fun. we are 6.5 hours from terrytown, ny...but I'm not sure we're planning to get there tonight. oh how I have (not) missed I-95!

packing again

we've swiftly accomodated mom's luggage and my new back-to-school daypack (that I am very excited about). the black dog is in there somewhere (she still eagerly hops in as soon as I open te door), but the yellow dog stays here. we are bringing very importand things like chocolate cheesecake, a package for fierce when she arrives at her new home and my new (gasp!) computer. [I'm not sure how I am going to give up my 6 year old laptop. it's missing keys, runs slowly and doesn't always connect to the Internet. but for some reason I love it. or maybe I am just change adverse. am I already a crotchety old person at the age of 28?]

loretta says goodbye to the south

here we go...(again)

in about an hour the mom and i hit the road. this time we go north! hopefully after a long day of driving (and not too much of this tropical storm stuff that the media is going nuts over) we will get ourselves somewhere near new york city. tomorrow we get to see the farm where sara is working this summer and have catch up time! more to come...

27.8.09

i'm her mom. nooo, she's not.

this video is my favorite. it's been watched 5,214,921 times on youtube as of today. i'm pretty sure that i have watched at least 5% of those views. really, there is something about this that just makes me so, so happy! so, i am sure i have tried to cram this clip down your throat before...but in case that's not the case...here you go.

i want pie, i want beef jerkey!

...and thank you liz for introducing me to this.

photo update & welcome!

hi friends,
if you were reading earlier this week and the pictures came up blank...they have been re-posted and you can see not-really-that-exciting pictures of my trip. if you are not one of the three loyal readers of this post (greenpants, darcyface and jeannie bean) welcome! if you live in portland...i miss you.

no really, she did this the whole trip...

dog's eye view

cute new friends!

(I am trouble shooting sending pics to the blog from my phone...hope
this works!)
fierce and miss peach had a fun romp tonight...chasing the bouncy ball
down the dark driveway. they are both conked out on the floor!
mechanical pencils. they have mechanical pencils, I love mechanical pencils. I love visiting my parents.

h a p p y. b i r t h d a y. g r e e n p a n t s!

23.8.09

day 5: ready to be somewhere.
music: gayatri mantra, random npr and local public radio. shuffle (which brought up a 1-2-3 punch of chris pureka, dixie chicks and indigo girls that made me
cry!) quiet & rain.
coffee. i had to.
things: an adorable older farmer gentleman wearing a black and white flannel shirt and black jeans, riding a very nice road bike on the frontage road next to the freeway at 7 in the morning? exercise? farm chores? running errands? I don't know which, but it was such a lovely juxtaposition that I've been thinking of it all day. also, dreamy vintage tractors, each being hauled behind a pick-up truck, each truck being driven by an older farming looking gentleman. did they know, could they assume that little old me was drooling over and covering their shiny old tractors? fierce gave up and actually sat down in the car, pulling her head inside the window as it started to rain. she had stood up with het head out the winiw about 97% of the drive.
states: il, in, ky, tn, nc
status: exhausted.
I'm all cozied up in a real bed, showered and fed (sushi!) and caught up with the folks. people here have for real air conditioning in their homes, weird. fierce is having a slumber party with her new bff, miss peach, in the laundry room...and I get to sleep in tomorrow morning because my parent will let the dog out, phew!

let's see if this works...

looks like the dog is pretty glad to be in a real house. so am i too! for some reason photo blogging isn't working from my phone...hence all the blank photos. i've filled in the previous gaps, but now it's time to problem solve. hmmm...
home! sweet (parent's) home.
last pit stop and I got to finally use the gas card! glad to know exxon stations exist somewhere. 1.5 hours to go!
nc!
tennessee
smoking and gambling in the gas station...kentucky!
Illinois, check.
Indiana, check.
hello Kentucky!

22.8.09

I'm pumping my own gas and drinking a milkshake from a styrofoam cup. I miss you oregon!
Kansas city, mo
Kansas city, ks
kanorado!

so beautiful, but so stressful to drive

colorado

utah, almost colorado

she will sniff the way to boston!

the only thing that changed about this image during the trip was the scenery behind the dog. she did this for about 95% of our journey to charlotte. we'll see if she repeats the performance en route to boston.

serious co-pilot

mile post 3, I-86, idaho

this is where jeepie bit the dust (and i almost did too) on a dark and icy night in the middle of idaho, december 2004. phew, glad i made it back!

well, that's easy

if the atlas says so...it must be true

it's an old atlas...i wonder if this festival still exists...

she doesn't know what she's in for

here we go

harmonium? check!
dog? check!
water? check!
books? check!

cat in a barrel

we sure know how to have fun! last night in town, hanging out and pawning my stuff of on folks.

um, where did it go?

this truck ate all my stuff!

the last box of miscellany...

I think I fit more in there after the picture.

really? that much stuff?

finally, photo blogging!

uma is so cute, I had to post this pic from our dinner at lovely hula hands.
day 3: dog is my co-pilot (she sat on my previous co-pilot, we re-arranged).
miles: lots
gas mileage: magically improved from days 1 & 2.
states: Utah and almost all of colorado.
thoughts: colorado is really wide. I think Colorado and I still have a challenged relationaship.
music: shuffle, npr, quiet.
things: delicious farmers' market peaches and nectarines. big mountains and big clouds. a dog with a runny nose. sending the first postcards. did I mention colorado is big? driving on winding, steep roads is exhausting. people who drive in Colorado drive fast...and like to tailgate.
destination: best western, stratton, co (almost Kansas, but it was too dark and fierce was panting a lot!). there is a tv here, and hence I am up past bedtime. turns out both human and dog feel safer while camping.
weirdness: as I was grabbing my goods out of the car at the motel, a young/college age girl stopped me and said, "um, I'm really forgetful...can you tell me what year it is?" her tone was so genuine...I'm still figuring out what to think of it.

21.8.09

the dog is boycoting the car. and we have two more days to charlotte, hmmm. Colorado seems to go and go and go.
steamboat springs smells like sage, yum.
colorado!
day 2: saraswati is my co-pilot.
places: eastern oregon, idaho, utah.
camping: wasatch mountain state park. stars and crickets.
eats: sauerkraut, chocolate, cheese, crackers, salami.
tunes: somewhere different now, watershed, patty, lucinda & the girls. shuffle. quiet.
sights: potatoes, jeepie's accident site of '04, dry brown hills, blue skies, fancy house developments built right up to the edge of park land.
hobbies: playing the harmie at state parks at night. laughing at the dog.

20.8.09

i'm in bliss, idaho!

19.8.09

it's a funny thing when you put your music on shuffle, and 'leaving' by the indigo girls is the first song up...honey all I know to do is go.

18.8.09

"i used to buy a pound of bacon for fifteen cents..."
packing the last box for the truck. i'm taking a picture and i'll post it later. contents: bike helmet, found car parts, mail basket, Mesa sweatshirt...
hee hee. just finishing packing for the truck as the movers take a break in the driveway. they are one southerner and two Portlanders of various backgrounds...and they ate discussing Obama, oil and the economy. "in 1966 a barrel of oil was..."

vanessa's furniture

hi 77 hampstead housemates. here is a quick review of my furniture since i couldn't figure out how to put pictures on the google doc. cheers!

the vintage sectional sofa

the full shot, with dog

coffee table

chair and ottoman (comfiest chair ever)

small kitchen table (it has wings that fold down and make it a rectangle)

butcher block/craft table

dog sofa (a refinished sofa, but it has foam instead of seats)

the dog chair (i cleaned it. it's the dogs favorite chair and it's an ugly chair. maybe it can go on one of the porches?)

dog supply cabinet from recycled wood (screw mounts into wall)
