in germany, there is a wonderful yogurt like product called quark. actually, yorgurt like flavors and consistancy is just one of its forms. this so called quark comes in tons of consistancies and flavors. it's great, and i never saw it in the u.s. before. so now green pants and i are on a mission to find out exactly what quark is, and how we can get it's deliciousness (the yogurt-like quark is the best) in the states. i'm hearing that quark is curd product, also known as "cottage cheese, quark, or panner." great, but that doesn't quite explain how one quark has so many different properties.
oh yes! this fantastic website from vermont butter and cheese company explains what quark is and they even make it. quark and vermont, my two favorite things, wow. please check it out.
must find even more info. oakdale cheeses has quark, but only the sour cream type...so how in the world do they make the fruity yogurt kind, and how can i find it here?
wowzers, the first day back at work is hard. especially since it's a gorgeous day outside today. so far i've balanced my accounts and gone through all the mail while i was gone. no mr. squirrel, don't be jealous. and i've planned what i'll do next...but i don't quite feel like playing with duct tape yet. the urge will hit soon enough though, i'm sure of it.
there'll be a new addition to the super blog list soon...raspberry world! any friend of the painted turtle is a friend of mine...and there are so many connections too. like hamden and germany and the list goes on. i should have met her while i was in munich...we must have been very near each other.
this is the actual website posting from the government which calls for the use of duct tape. i hadn't seen it until now. is 'junk' a technical term?
i like this guys sense of humor in making hilarious parody duck and cover animation. check it out for a giggle.
you can read hereabout the increase of duct tape usage in the arts as war commentary.
good morning all!
the good thing about jet lag (sort of) is that sometimes you wake up real early in the morning when you are back home. but i'm happy as can be, and ready to start blogging again. i thought all my diligent readers (ha!) might need a quick update on duct tape in the news. here's a link to a bizarre story about a mother duct tapeing her children...and going to court.

27.4.03

...and my archives aren't working. grrr. any ideas?
i'm home. i've got my alias in. i'm too tired to follow dragnet, and i'm heading to sleepyland. i'll be back to regular duct tape blogging soon enough though!

tonight green pants and i watched 'risky business' for the first time. ok, so that's not really something german. but it's fun to watch an american 80's movie 20 years after it was made, and in a foreign country. what was all the hype about? this movie was ok, i guess. silly and nice to laugh at...but did people really take it seriously? the best part is that it led to green pants having another nickname...guido the killer pimp. i am now t-love, too. we always end up with road trip names, and since this is the ultimate road (plane?) trip it's only appropriate. favorite line of the movie, "i have a trig midterm tomorrow, and i am being chased by guido the killer pimp." thanks american cinema for timeless classics like this one. well, off to german mtv dancefloor classics!
reasons i like munich...
golden girls in german
the real version of the t.a.t.u. video (it makes more sense)
the world snooker championship on 24/7. now i have to learn about snooker.
pretzels
fruit and quark. yes, it's like whipped yogurt, but even more delicious. must find it at home.
good chocolate and marzipan.
green pants
i hope blogging from a land line works, green pants says she has had problems with it. glad to see there are so many shout outs (ok, more than the one a week i usually get, and they aren't all just from b.p.) they make me happy. so, here's the low-down...
the train trip back from venice was arduous. i am also a bad speller. there were rowdy, drunken americans (those darn americans) in the compartment next to us, and the man above me snored the whole night. so it took a nice nap on tuesday to get al and i back into shape. then tuesday she showed me munich, and it started to rain. but there was thunder and lightening which makes it all ok. today we walked all over munich, climed the tower at st. peters church (i think) and got to see the view. anyone who knows me knows i like views, so i was happy. then more walking and we saw the river and the english garden and sausage and the biggest daffodils i have ever seen, and lots of grass and trees. these were a happy site after venice, which had no grass or trees in the main area, and a few in the public park. tomorrow we go hiking in the alps, which i am extremely excited about. yay. and friday to dachau, which will undoubtedly be a moving experience. we ate and drank lots of chocolate tonight, so we might be up for a while, but other than that...life is good!

21.4.03

tonight we head back to munich. this is exciting. then tuesday we rest and recover from the night train and bad sleep. probably a relaxed day and night with some movies and more catching up. i am excited about a day of hiking in the alps, another of exploring munich, and hopefully meeting up with thekla...who was a nanny to me growing up. that sounds like bad grammar. and the best part is...lots of pretzels. and beer, but the pretzels take the prize. my time's up, be well!
31. help wandering tourists.
32. play the 'what country are they from' game
things i have done in venice, in no particular order:
1. walk
2. eat gelato
3. stop in the window of every bakery, yum.
4. buy something in most bakeries. merangies, odd pastries, something with bracy (ick!)
5. eat delicious little panino sandwiches. prosciutto, brie, mozzarella. yum.
6. walk
7. cross bridges.
8. frown at the bad smell of canal water.
9. pet dogs.
10. shop and splurge. i will write later about the leather journal store and the SENT murano glass house. two of the highlights of my trip fer shure.
11. catch up with green pants, very fun.
12. buy and write post cards...discover that post office has been closed since friday and will re-open tomorrow, or else next monday (4-26) no one seems sure of when really.
13. walk
14. be afraid of pigeons
15. chase glass jewelrey, long story
16. eat more gelato
17. get rained on
18. take the water taxi
19. explore murano island and see more glass than ever in my life
20. eat a small bit of pasta, but it was delicious. it had bacon, how can anything with bacon be bad?
21. ignore gondola drivers
22. attacked by pigeon
23. be home by 10pm every night
24. walk
25. get a good night of sleep!
26. get losted on the narrow streets
27. admire international fashion
28. have fun conversations with nice shop keepers (again, leather store and SENT)
29. oh geez, i have to think of at least 30. look at people's purses (naturally) but i always wonder if they think i am eyeing it because i want to steal.
30. fight walking tourists.
ha, there...30 things, and i bet there are a million more i can't think of on the spot.
wish i could use some html or post 'shout outs' to other posts. so much to say. but sadly the european keyboard is killing me and html would take too long, even the smallest bit...and i can't get blogger to work right to do anything else. and worst of all, i can only open one window at a time, so no shouting out! oh well.
thanks again b.p. for taking such good care of the blog while i am away. i am so glad you posted the minpin from the rally, that was the cutest thing ever. i'd been telling green pants about it, and now i have photos as proof. my one thought, in retrospect, as all good thoughts are...it might have looked a little like you were hitting on the owner of the minpin...as you were so persistant on getting said owners attention and petting the dog. just a thought!
you'll be glad to know that there are tons of cute dogs here. adorable, running all over the streets, most not on leashes. and unlike most other countries i've visited, these aren't strays! nope, apparently people who tour here just love bringing their pups on vacation with them. yay, so lots of pups, big and small all over for me to play with. in the streets, in the stores, everywhere. and cats too. my favorite is seeing the cats on the boats or gondolas in the water, do they know they are on water? if they did, would it take away any enjoyment of their lounging?
greetings from casanova disco, the only real disco in venice. it's 19.38 on monday, and green pants and i are sort of killing time until our night train departs. i am secretly excited about taking a night train because i have never done it before. although i am sure i won't get a good night of sleep, oh well. i have 17 whole minutes left on my internet card and i am going to use them, right here on this blog.

19.4.03

greetings from venice! thanks to b.p. for posting, you're fantastic. venice is quite surreal, sort of like the pirates of the carribean at disneyland...not a real place. ah, 2 minutes left at cafe. green pants says hi too!
to the fam: happy easter
m-dog: miss you.
b.p.: thanks for keeping things in order

ciao!

16.4.03

that didn't come through...grrr. i'm going on vacation to venice and munich to visit with green pants. hopefully the old guy will keep things up. i'm outta here, back on the 26th, with photos!
well, the time has come, and i've been too busy lately to give my loyal readers (ok, b.p.) notice. i'm outta here for a bit...i'm going to munich and venice to visit with 0 comments

15.4.03

i'm late! i'm late for a very important date...
but i still have to tell you all (with details to follow) that this is the second day in less than a week in which i have been blocked into my parking spot by a rig or firetruck. but it's ok, cause i'm happy.

14.4.03

ah, tax time. i love it. i love it about as much as i love swimming in boiling water with ravenous sharks. i filed my taxes a long time back, but i still seem to be stuck in the chaos and panic of the tax rush. all i can say is...growl. to make matters worse, my favorite store in town, the post office has been transformed into something more gruesome that all realms of dante's inferno combined. yea, it's that bad.

congratulations annabelle matheys on the completion of your senior essay!

13.4.03

yes, i am known as the evil child because i am a bit evil, but only on rare occassion. in this episode, the distributor's cell phone fell out while he was riding in the back of my car. i found it today, and i feel evil. he also looses his phone a lot, and i'm wondering how long it will take him to find it, or at least realize where it is. maybe he's freaking out a little thinking he lost it at a club or other sketchy locale last night. hee hee hee.
any thoughts on the ed season finale last friday? i thought it was pretty dopey and drawn out, and had lots of that high-school feeling 'oh my gosh! i can't believe you told him my deepest darkest fantasy" feeling. if ed keeps moving at this rate, i sort of hope they go off the air.
sadly, my archives aren't working. harumph, is there a reason for this?
one lone last post, i promise.
i seem to mention sport the dog a lot in this blog. he's the newest member of the vanessa jean crew, but until now, no one on the blog has seen his adorable puppy face...until now! luckily, steve the monkey recently popped down from eugene, oregon for this photo shoot with sport. isn't he just the cutest pup you have ever seen? c'mon, give a shout out and tell sport-o just how cute he is!
and although dogs on a run are pretty great, nothing is better than dinner at hama in hamden with the crew, especially when it's with the distributor who i haven't seen in ages! that was fun, fun, fun. and the food was delicious! i highly recommend this japanese place, it's the best and most creative sushi i have ever had, despite the weird karmic problems that often ensue.
running with dogs...
even after such a busy day tomorrow, it was sunny and i was energetic when i came home. so i decided to take a run and tackle the mountain! well, the mountain turned my run into more of a hike, but there were adorable dogs at every turn, which made for an excellent outing. the best part was the group of three pups outside my house, mingling with their owners and each other. it was so cute and i even got to play with them!
i promised duct tape party stories, so here goes...
yesterday a fantastic friend of mine hosted a vanessa jean duct tape party. it seemed too good to be true, as her best friend from high school (oddly enough which is my high school too!) would be in town. so we had lots of cookies, looked at duct tape bags, and people got quite excited about custom made darcy bags! it was fun to see some friends and tell the duct tape story, but the best part was a completely surprise high school reunion. there were 6 of us from the small high school in one room, and the distributor was in town too, and so was a rugby-playing friend, and b.p. too!. wow, it was overwhelming, and it was sunny and beautiful and just fantastic.
i'ev finally got my hands on some information about the new haven zen center. i've been wanting to learn more about it since my summer in a buddhist monastery in taiwan. but i've been so busy since coming back to new haven that i have had a chance to get in touch, but now i can. this is exciting. and for a collection of stories and pictures about 40 westerners in taiwan for the summer check out woodenfish.org.
well, well, well aren't you glad that you can now actually see what i am talking about...ok, it doesn't make sense right now, but if you just count to three, i promise it will. ok, close your eyes and count to 3. 1...2...3... viola! now it makes so much more sense, doesn't it?! this is exciting. i saw this duct tape reference on a phone booth on bleecker street in new york, serendipitously (is that spelled right?) just after i walked out of blush, who now carries the vanessa jean line. i just couldn't resist taking the picture, no matter how much i freaked out the woman who was using the phone. over and out, and more pics to come!
grammar lesson for you:

that's all. :)
ahhh, and this is what i was trying to pass along from bethany. it's just more hilarity.
darn it, i hate it when that happens...see post below. basically, you still have to click on b.p.'s link, it's hilarious too.
b.p.'sresponse to 0 comments
a haa ha haa ha!
this is a good day for excellent posts from other people. b.p. is out of control with cats that hate you/ my favorite is angel. oh dear, this is hilarious and hours of fun.

so much to blog, so little time! look forward to posts about duct tape parties, buddhism, hilarious duke students, running with dogs, warm days, high school reunions, japanese dinner and a visit from the distribution manager. and that has just been today! have a good night!

11.4.03

quite a night last night at artspot. thanks to a special shout-out, the vanessa jean bags got passed around the room. more to come, but i gotta run now!
it's raining and a little bleary out. is it still fair to say that april showers bring may flowers?

10.4.03

"ha haa!" she says defiantly. "now it's time to go have some fun."
wow! it's been a maniacal week of working my fingers to the bone...and with much help from b.p. i just shipped ALL the vanessa jean website orders out. finally! not too much looming over in the order department! but i happened to log back on to the order interface, and what did i find...and order from AUSTRALIA!!! i just thought that was cool and wanted to share.
someone (b.p.) anonymous asks, "why does snoop like clueless so much?"
good morning! it's been an incredible day, and it's only noon. wowzers. i thought it was great because of the sun, the warm, the printmaking studio, a pretty velvet ribbon selection, a big check (no giggling annabelle matheys), and the art store...but life got even better when i saw a dog. i see dogs every day, but this dog was wandering on the sidewalk. so i got out of jeepie and chatted with the old pup, and followed her for a few blocks just to be sure she was safe and to try to get her home. she was a sweet dog, and she was meandering happily. then, around the corner came a volvo station wagon, the dog mom opened the door, ms. pup hopped in, and off they went. i got a quick 'thanks', i didn't even get to say goodbye to my new friend, but then again, nothing lasts forever.
if you've got some time on your hands, or you are looking to procrastinate a bit, commercial closet is a terrific and indepth site. the link is to the 'about us' page with their mission statement and this nice summary"... the commercial closet project is a unique, non-profit education and journalism organization that charts the evolving worldwide portrayals of the gay community in mainstream advertising. It proactively reaches out to ad agencies, marketers and the media to raise awareness of gay representation in advertising worldwide and improve it.."
the site is informative, as well as hilarious, hosting a vault of television and print commercials from the u.s. and abroad. the site will suck you in, so don't browse around if you're in a hurry and not idly procrastinating.
and for all you ed fans out there, check out this list of ten dollar bets between mike and ed. priceless.
tomorrow (frinday) is the season finale of ed, our favorite bowling alley lawyer romantic comedy plot twisting and angonizingly long show. apparently this "season finale answers the 'will they or won't they [ed and carol]?' question once and for all! really, we promise!" well, answer or not, it's sure to be full of the ed-like romantic drama i dream of every night. and ed and carol have to give in at some point, mostly just to give us viewers what we want...before the show goes off the air...which it seems will be sometime soon. what other show makes the switch from wednesday primetime to tgifriday without getting the axe anytime soon. so, ed will be gone soon enough, but before that happens i want to see a little ed and carol action, without all that extra drama and will they or won't they shakiness. enough said.
ah yes, it's thursday again. for some reason or another, thursday feels like monday. hmm, i'm tired and pretty much nonsensical. that's ok though.

this just in from a happy vanessa jean customer in eugene, oregon.
"i just wanted to thank you for communicating with me about a purse i ordered. i ordered it for my sisters birthday and needed it today, i was really excited to get it earlier than expected. i was even more excited when i opened the box and saw how adorable it was!! before i wrapped it i took it around to everyone i could think of and showed it off. i definitely will be ordering more in the future and have friends that will too. "

thanks, you're a doll! you just add one more sparkle to eugene, oregon. i'm wondering if this customer knows steve the monkey?
* meow * again. i just heard word that the humans are leaving for the weekend! phil, peaches, sport, the new neighbor and me (em the cat) have the reign of the roost for the weekend. hee hee hee. i'll keep you all updated on the sneaky things we do while they are gone.
and the marathon day continues. i'm almost there, i can feel it. just a little bit longer at the work bench, then i can start working in front of the tv, which makes working a bit less lonesome. not too much to complain about though...because i'm bringing home an italian bomb pizza from modern apizza, the best pizza in town. yum.
Q: what is this shout out thing i see after each post?
A: well, i'm glad you asked that! the shout out is a little button you press so you can leave your feedback about any post you like. the shout out button appears after every post, so you can reply to anything you want. it's actually fun...go ahead, click on it, give it a try. i like to know what you are thinking!
how is it that reebok can keep reinventing itself? i just saw a commercial for a pair of RBK shoes...
if you happen to be watching any mtv or vh1 (not that i do, um, sure) you'll notice lots of commercials sponsored by white bedroom dot com. i got curious and looked it up, it seems like a hip and educational forum for sex ed, but they clearly ain't getting no government funding.
back to it again today. lots of maron's to make, an erika, some darcies and wallets, then i'm done filling orders from the website, then on to a few consignment orders and then a duct tape party on saturday, and then i can breathe again!
the highlight of the night was a vanessa jean product drop off to the kitchen cabinet crew tonight. i hadn't seen kate for ages and it was good to see lily again. both gals looked terrific, although a little tired from all that law school work. i hope they like the new mini maron from vanessa jean * duct tape designs.
now it's off to bed for me, after about 30 minutes of not being able to handle so many subtitles in bread and tulips and italian for beginners (which is in neither italian or english...it would help if i read the boxes a bit more. good night.

it's funny how a quasi-productive day can suddenly turn into a productive day. yay. now i'm off for movies and an in-town delivery.
so, does anyone know what it means when you call a phone number, but the other end of the phone just beeps at you (beep beep beep beep...)? or when you place a call, it rings a few times, and then it goes to the beeps? grrr.

movies to see...

i just yoga-fied myself for the first time in about 4 months. my little body is extremely happy, and i'm going to feel that joy tomorrow for sure.
let's see...it's 6.47 and still light out. oh how i miss that hour in the morning, but how i love it at dusk.
dear vanessa jean & co. crew watch for info (aka begging from vj) for some new spiffiness to the blog.
thanks b.p. for bringing a little peter pan into our lives. take some time to really explore this site.
in case you need adoption services, this seems to be the place to go. however, this site is actually blogged for it's adorable photo of a momma/dadda duck being followed by ducklings and a puppy. it's the header on the top of the page.

i'm breaking my promise. i'm blogging again. i get a nice midwest shoutout from the kitchen cabinet. go me for beating the monkey. and i'm glad b.p.won the prize.
really, i'm going back to work now. i promise, no more posting for at least one half of an hour.
thank you new york post for this not so informative article about duct tape.
yay! a phone call from bottega giuliana. the bags are doing well there, they are almost out, and they want MORE. the camo is apparently all the rage, but people want bags with fold over tops (so stuff doesn't fall out). i think this means i need to make a camo mini alice, a camo mini erika, a camo hanna and maybe a mini dana too. yay. this also means i get to pick up a check, since the goods there are on consignment. whippeee. this will give me a nice, fun adventure today.
i love the fact that the companies advertising in the ad space on the top of this blog are always related to some sort of text in the blog. right now the ads are for 1. kids sunglasses and 2. the sunglass man. obviously these are related the the post about sport the dog's new shades, but i just think it's hilarious that some sort of machine makes a connection between my content and an appropriate ad. maybe i should just start posting about completely bizarre things (like i don't already?) and see what types of ads they bring up.
what to say? it's cold out, it's not snowing, but the sidewalks are icy. and for a graceful person like me, that poses a few challengese. i'm trying to stay motivated, but without mr. sun, it's a bit hard. some errands this morning, some duct-tape playing now, and soon a trip to walmart to buy some more tape. grrr.
you'll all notice a new blog added to the rockin' blogs section to your right.... yes folks, painted-turtle is a fun place to be, and you should be there! ms. painted turtle is a kind vanessa jean supported who is happily housing her own 0 comments

i've just added a new link to a procrastinate clique which seems to be a collection of people with blogs, who like to do things, but not necessarily right away...hence the procrastination. anyhow, they have a cute pic of a slug, which is reason enough for the link.
"...oh mr. sun, sun, mr. golden sun, hiding behind a tree..."
i thought that by april i would be hammering grommets in the sunshine, in the green backyard. little did i know i'd be hammering on the front porch, sheltering myself from the snow. growl. good thing i still have my very professional snow scraper inside the car. it's a well-worn cardboard cookie box, folded over and it works great.
5.30 pm. still snowing. tiny little snowflakes, sticking on front laws and cars, but not on the streets or sidewalks. listening to a depressing tal about deportation. two and a half hours until fun fun fun at toads (stella from the state). i've only seen a few episodes of the state, but i'm going with some big fans, so it should be fun.
i use hotmail. i'm trying to log-in, but it keeps telling me i have to enable cookies first. but...cookies are already enabled, which leaves me e-mail-less and craving some chocolate chip goodness. arg.
it's still snowing. will it ever end?
apparently this is the list of words coined by shakespeare. i'm a linguist (sort of) i should know off-hand if this is actually true. thanks b.p. for bringing this to our attention. we'll consult the 0 comments
it's april 7. usually this means it's warm out. but today is the .polar opposite of warm. in fact, i think only a polar bear would want to go outside today. the snow is coming down hard, and it's sticking in some spots. oh dear, will summer ever come?
ben & jerry's (and yahoo) "lids for kids" sweepstakes.
new haven is center stage for bumper stickers. there are tons of hilarious, political and completely bizarre bumper stickers all over the place here. some of the strangest bumper stickers i have ever seen. my goal is to start listing them on this blog, but until then, here is a nice list of some funny ones.
i read about this first in maxim at the end of the summer, but wasn't going to be around long enough to try it with any of the cats from the vanessa jean crew. but here it is again, how to toilet-train your cat! i really want someone to try this and tell me that it works, it would make my day. the link has a cute pic of a cat too.

nothing personal, but there are certain celebrities that annoy me. this one always seems a little too perfect, so i'm glad to see there is something hush, hush that the smoking gun can bring to our attention.

who says dogs don't need sunglasses? word from the homefront is that sport, the newest vanessa jean crew member, is getting a pair of shades. he's a black and white mottled pointer, lab, katahoola, mutt type thing and i think he'll be stylin' in the new get-up! isn't that just the silliest/most ridiculous thing you've ever seen?
vanessa jean is exhausted. it's been a long weekend of minging with other old folks like herself! as in a reunion! so, some volleyball playing, some time at mory's and toads (oh geez) and not too much sleep. which explains my absence from the blog. and i've been sleeping all day today. blogging (and business) will resume tomorrow!
well mr. squirrel you might just be missing out on the best part of the blog! in order to read the blog in all it's fun and colorful glory, go to the website www.vanessajean.blogspot.com and you'll see that the blog is a whole lot more fun. so go to the double screen place to enter your message, but go to the other site to read all the stuff.

for some reason, vanessa jean has been posted to URLDJ, and there are even comments.
posting galore at the kitchen cabinet. then again, why do i have to tell you? they are probably the reason you are here in the first place! :)
this article investigates the similarities between duct tape and small businesses. someone had an idea, and ran with it.

well, absolutely nothing new to report. i am tired, and most likely going to bed. tired tired tired. yawn. snore. not even an exciting duct tape article to report, or even a good duct tape sighting. sigh, oh well. bedtime.
"my niece was 4 when she first wore chinchilla."
thank you baby, featuring clipse, for this insight.
i'm not asking for a lot here, just one sunny day. it's been warmer lately (ok, barring the snow this week) than the cold, cold days of winter. it's spring now, and i appreciate the warmth, i really do. but what i would like more is a sunny day. the sun doesn't even have to be warm, but just bright and yellow and happy. and i want to sit on the front porch and bask in it.

so, if anyone reading this has any pull with the weather folks, i would love a favor. thanks
the title of this washington post article caught my attention. an emergency kibbles and bits kit? doesn't offer much insight, but it talks about duct taping food to your dog. so that makes it worth while.
a cute little list of ways to eliminate a little war related stress in your life, if you have it. infact, it's sort of a fun list of things to do anyway. it also includes duct tape, which is why it made the blog.
not just warts, but shingles too. i love duct tape.

vanessa wins! it's a triumph for the small business owner, taking stake and telling the big dogs what she thinks and just how badly she's getting ripped off! praise to the power of the complaint letter! well, that might seem like a pointless babbling, but i'm excited to report that the problems i have been having with my credit cards processing company are resolved...or so it seems.
this gives me faith that everyone has a voice...even if it means sending letters to the highest posts of a corporation.
